The Sarugakyo Hotel is a modern Japanese inn (Ryokan) in Joshin'etsukogen National Park along the border of Gunma
and Niigata prefectures, and the hotel is built at a place of
scenic beauty facing Lake Akaya to the south and the Tanigawa Mountains to the north. The hotel has open-air
gensen-kakenagashi baths (hot spring water flows into the bath directly from the source) filled with natural hot spring water. The hotel serves a traditional multicourse Japanese dinner called tofu kaiseki using tofu (bean curd) and yuba (tofu skin) made at the factory in the hotel and local seasonal ingredients. The tofu is made every morning, and the menu is changed almost every month. Everything served as a part of the Kaiseki Ryori (traditional Japanese multicourse cuisine), which is healthy and tasty, are the best dishes made with a focus on the finest details. At 8 o’clock after dinner, the mochi-pounding and the telling of folktales will take place in the misogura (bean paste storage) room on the first floor. For breakfast, various tofu dishes are served buffet style.
Based on an idea originally proposed by a senior host in 1989, the hotel has served sophisticated Kaiseki Ryori prepared by the head chef with techniques learned at a high-class Japanese restaurant (called ryotei) and ryokan using seasonal ingredients and tofu products made from high quality soybeans and pure water from Mt. Mikuni at the factory in the hotel. Dishes served at dinner are tofu kaiseki using homemade tofu (bean curd) made from quality water sourced from Mt. Mikuni and quality soybeans. According to the number of guests, tofu is made every morning at the tofu factory in the hotel. This healthy and delicious Kaiseki Ryori consists of dishes made with a focus on the finest details and thus offers guests the taste of seasonal ingredients. Please take your time and enjoy the meal.
For breakfast, various tofu dishes based on the breakfast served in the tofu shop are served buffet style. The menu includes rice cooked in an iron pot, freshly made sukui tofu (extra soft tofu), pleasant smelling dengaku (miso-glazed and grilled tofu), and moccha-jiru made with mixed miso. With a wide range of tofu dishes and freshly baked soymilk breads, as well as Western dishes, we look forward to seeing you in the restaurant.
A bath has been a place where villagers gather and relax since ancient times. Our large bath is a reproduction of the one used at that time, and there are bathtubs made of Japanese hinoki wood in a large private house built in the Yamatomune style (thatch and tile combination roofs).
Minwa-no-Yu consists of Hana-no-yu and Kusa-no-yu, and they are like baths from which we hear folktales. In order to pass on the bath’s role of connecting people to the present, Sarugakyo Hotel has reproduced the same shape of the baths as those from the early times. Open-air baths consists of Ruri-no-yu and Mitta-no-yu that offer a view overlooking Lake Akaya. The baths are surrounded by the sweet smell of cherry blossoms in spring, wisteria flowers in summer, attractive and colorful autumn leaves in autumn, and snow-covered scenery in winter. Also, two chartered (private time reserved) baths, Kaede-no-yu and Sakura-no-yu, where guests can enjoy bathing in private, are available. Kaede-no-yu is very spacious with a capacity of 6 people. Therefore, if you charter the bath for two people, you have enough space to relax and stretch your legs. Sakura-no-yu is an indoor bath with a large window and spacious chartered bath. Look outside to see cherry trees. In spring, enjoy bathing while viewing cherry blossoms
Private baths that can be enjoyed in the private space, your two “maple hot water” and “cherry hot water” available. “Yu maple” is has become a spacious building of the two private baths. Capacity is 6 people, it will be able to extend the legs with a margin as long as it is for two persons.
